Forced into broodyness

It may be possible to encourage a hen to go broody by allowing her to build up a clutch, but I doubt that it is possible to force a hen to go broody.

if your really desperate (this is kinda harsh) my friend said you can take a bucket with food and sugar water in it. the bucket should be fairly large and fairly roomy. put eggs in it and a comfy nest put a hen in it for a few days and she will be broody i haven't actually tried it though again it is a pretty harsh way

once she is broody take her out and give her a nest away from the others in a dark place with food and sugar water.

Never heard of this before. Why sugar water? It seems a bit off to me.

sugar water helps too keep the hen from losing large amounts of weight during broodiness since they wont eat as often. i havent actually tried this before but she is supposed to release a certain hormone causing broodiness not sure if it works but ive heard it works great. although it is harsh

very interesting. good to know.

Mine go broodie constantly because our nest box is quite dark I think. So if you want to encourage it I'd make it nice and dark and enclosed feeling where they are laying their eggs.

I personally wouldn't go near that bucket idea but that's just me.
