I adore Russell Brand. For Christmas I got his first book, My Booky Wook, and couldn't wait to start reading. As I got deeper into the book however, more and more of it's humor was based entirely on references to British pop culture both from the 80s, 90s and now. Of course it is, right? Russell is British, he grew up there, not here in the U.S. Of course the story of his life is going to reference where he grew up. Except that humorous jabs and jibs at a pop culture you have never had any exposure to isn't funny. It's over your head. On the bottom of every page there is fine print explaining the references for Americans, but by the time you go read the fine print, come back and reread the joke in order to get it, it's not funny any more. So then it just ends up being a rather depressing story about a child who grew up in emotional turmoil.
I imagine this is about the same kind of circumstance. By the time the clever little pun is explained it's no longer as clever as it began and since it was a thin bit of cleverness to begin with... it's just not funny at all anymore.
