I've been posting for a bit now, but figured I should "formally" introduce myself.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We experienced The Chickening for the first time on 30 January 2010.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Twenty babies. They are three weeks old today, in fact. They are straight run from a local breeder, so we will probably have some roos to send off to Camp Frigidaire eventually.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have six Buff Orps, six Welsummers, six White Rocks, two RIR. I want to get some Black Copper Marans, and my husband would like some Black Jersey Giants when we add more one day.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I've been researching chickens and homesteading for a few years now, so Google likely served it up to me at some point.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, sewing, making jewelry, junking/antiquing (primarily mid-century and kitsch items; see my blog at www.kitschicat.com, but also useful household/garage items), helping my husband work on cars and other DIY stuff around the house/farm, learning more about anything interesting or useful to me via reading, being mentored, or taking classes.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I lived on the Detroit border in East Detroit for eleven years until September 2008, when my husband and I bought a 14-acre farm. I've always had family who lived in the country, so I'm grateful to be there myself now. My husband is originally from Long Island and loves how much space we have here! We have our son (technically my stepson but I call him son) on the weekends and he loves his "farm home" - we like having him here as much as possible. We have a Boston Terrier (9 yrs old) named Loki, who is my little buddy; he keeps me company all day long and has a great personality. Our outdoor cat (who lives in the lap of luxury in her own dedicated building, complete with heated bed and dishes, and a kitty door to her screened in porch off the back of the bldg) is Artemis. She was a feral rescue from my in-laws on Long Island. As soon as we have the money, we will get her fixed and put a kitty door on the front of the building so she can cross over to our pole barn and mouse in there. I worked in the IT field for a long time, and was laid off from my job of almost nine years last March (2009) during a massive cutback. We are really trying to get something going so that I can earn enough income from home so that I don't have to go back to work for someone else. (Here in Michigan, jobs are few and far between right now anyway!)
This is a fantastic site, full of great information and friendly folk. I'm very glad to have found it!
