Hello everyone,

My family and I decided to get chickens this spring as we figured out my middle child, who is on the Autism Spectrum, loved caring for the chickens each time we would visit local farms our friends who were lucky enough to have them. First off, they have been a godsend in they have helped him truly care for another living being and also since he has seen them since they were two days old he also has non judgmental friends when he is having a rough day.

Little did we know when we went down this road, our city did not allow “farm animals“ or “other agricultural activity” which includes growing fruit and melons. Fast forward several months and a civics lesson later for my oldest we got the laws and zoning regulations changed in our city so we will no longer be outlaws.

We have learned a massive amount from this forum in our endeavors and want to give our Amberlinks the best care possible as they mean more to my family than just a food supply.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? New to chickens, our nine girls were hatched 4/19/20

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Nine

(3) What breeds do you have? Amberlinks

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? The bond my son has with caring for them

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Wood working, gardening

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Family of five with three young children, all boys

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D. Internet searches always kept bringing me back here for the answers to my questions.

Welcome to BackYardChickens! So glad to have you here in our wonderful community of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people! Wow! Impressive that you got your zoning laws changed! Good for you!!

Hello and welcome! :frow
It's wonderful your son has a love for the animals. My oldest son has developmental delays and at one of the schools he had attended, they had a therapy dog come and help the children in the autism program because it helped them connect in a way that they couldn't with their peers. I had no idea animals were able to connect to people like that!
That is truly awesome that you were able to change the laws! How did you start the process, if you don't mind me asking?
