Hi,

We found 4 abandoned chickens near my house in San Ramon, CA. They have been living in the bushes for about a week and I decided to take them in and have been taking care of them in my backyard. At first I thought they were all hens but now I'm not too sure. One is a barred rock (it started crowing a couple days ago), one is a austrolop, and two are lakenvelders. The austrolop looks like a pullet, but the lakenvelders looks like cockerels.

I plan to drop them off at my county's animal shelter as I am not allowed to keep roosters. Please let me know if anyone in the bay area is interested in taking them.

Thanks,

Rebecca

Welcome to BYC, Rebecca. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm glad you were able to rescue those poor abandoned chickens. If you would like to make certain of their gender, just post some pics of them on our What Breed or Gender is This? section at https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this and let our experts there take a look at them for you. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Thanks Michael. I will take some pictures in the morning and post them. They are super sweet too. The barb rock started crowing a few days ago which leads me to think it's a rooster. I will post pictures to the section you recommended.

Good of you to take them in. Hope you can find a place for those cockerels. Here where I am, there is a site that you can post free ads, for a lot of different things..a chicken site included. Maybe there is one there? Thing is, people that are looking for roosters, want them big..for the stew pot. :/

You're welcome. I'll look forward to seeing their pics in that section tomorrow. If the Barred Rock is crowing, it is very likely a rooster. Hens do crow on rare occasions, but when it happnes, it's usually an older hen who has assumed the role of a rooster in a roosterless flock.

Hi Rebecca, welcome to BYC!

Kind of you to look after the abandoned chickens. Good luck with them, hope you end up with some girls (would you be keeping those?).

Nice to have you here!

Hi, I am new. Thanks for adding me to BYC. We are privileged to have moved back to the family farm 2 years ago. It's the tobacco farm where I grew up. My dad kept many chickens, guess he liked his eggs. They were free range before we knew that term. But the old henhouse is long gone, so the first order of business is to get a new one. Also, it seems the chicken-eating varmints have increased in recent years, so we really need more of a chicken fotress. I was thinking of a pre-fab tool shed that one can buy, paint and fix up for chickens. Unless there is an easy way to build one, I don't think we are going that route.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

I've seen pictures where people have modified the pre-fab tool sheds for coops. You'll just want to be sure to create plenty of ventilation and do something for the bottom so digging predators can't come up from underneath.

Have you checked out the coop section and forum yet? Might get some good ideas there:

Good luck, nice to have you here!
