Hello. Yesterday, we rescued a lost quail in our neighborhood who was being chased by a cat. We suspect she may have escaped from an enclosure since she seems healthy and appears to be used to people. She even lays eggs. We have been keeping her in a temporary cage in the garage and we are giving her water with electrolytes and feed. Unfortunately, we cannot keep her as we already have a house pigeon.

We have tried asking neighbors, but none of them answer the door. We would like some advice on how to find a new home for this quail.

I suggest putting an ad on Craigslist. Can you post some pictures so we can help you identify whether it's a coturnix, bob white or some other type of quail?

She has reddish brown feathers with no distinct pattern. IMG_20250623_113633_01.jpg IMG_20250623_113631_01.jpg IMG_20250623_113634_01.jpg

Also, would Craigslist be a good place to post as long as we specify we are only giving her away as a pet? Or would Facebook be better? We want to make sure whoever takes her knows that we want her taken care of as a pet.

Craigslist is a good place to rehome her. You may want to check your local NextDoor first to see if you can find her original home.

Facebook has very strict rules about posting animals, so it may not let you post anything about rehoming a live creature.

Since she's likely from nearby, you can also try making some "lost your pet quail? call us" notes and slipping them in mailboxes, or taping a notice on local telephone poles.

But yes, if you say she's laying eggs and specify you want her going to a home as a pet, Craigslist should be fine. A rooster would probably get eaten on the sly, but I doubt anyone's going to eat a good little egg layer. Especially not such a pretty one! I would initially post her for $10-20 (aka far more than she's worth as meat) to fully weed out sketchy people.
