Found my chicks with a wound on her neck today. It's a little large, but not too deep. She acts fine and I haven't seen them peck at each other. There are five of them and they are about 5-6 weeks old and in a closed coop outside that animals cant get in. What do I do? Will she be okay? What do about the pecking? and what do i do about the wound? Thanks!

If you have poultry netting, you can make a circular enclosure for her inside the coop - give her/him their own feeder and waterer. This way, it's protected from any pecking by the others, yet still able to be social with them. Just cleanse the area with warm water and you can use a very thin layer of bacitracin or neosporin to help facilitate healing. I hope all works out well for your chick!

Quote: I wouldn't go that route actually. It is a known fact that chickens are attracted to the color red. So even if you are not witnessing them peck at the wound, chances are they are. There is a product called Blue-Kote wound spray. It's an antiseptic spray which dries quickly and is effective against bacteria and common fungal infections. It also dye's the skin and feathers a very prominent purple and thus the boo boo instantly becomes invisible to the others. Because they are not attracted to purple, everyone will leave it alone and it will heal. You can find it at Tractor Supply Company or any farm store. If the wound is pretty small, then spray it into a cup and then coat a q-tip with it and apply to the baby. I've used it in the past and it works GREAT.
