well i live in a nice neighborhood and their was a femla mallard that laid eggs near our community pool and they hatched and shes nowhere to be seen!....... i rescued 1 and my friend recued 2!!

I'm thinking that it is illegal for you to keep those ducklings. I know that in NJ, I would have to turn them over to a wildlife rehabber. I think the migratory bird act makes it illegal to remove them from the wild or to maintain them without a permit. You might want to check this out.

I agree, sometimes the mom leaves them alone for a while. When they want her, they will run around peeping their heads off. I've seen mothers take more than an hour before going to look for them. If you go back, see if she will come back quacking around for them. Perhaps she'll take them back. Make sure it's her before leaving them, though as other females might nip at them unless they have ducklings the same age.

ETA: Yes, they have to be turned into a licensed facility that handles wildlife if you can't find the mom.

She was probably just out foraging and would have come back. I would check the area several times a day to see if she's come back looking for her babies.

Good luck.

It is true, Mallards can not be kept here in FL. Finding their mother is a priority and if she isn't found a wildlife rehabber. Call FWC (Florida Wildlife Control) and they will help you out.

I would suggest (if you still have them) keep returning back to the pool and keep looking for the mother.. if you find her put the ducklings near her .. stand back observing etc .... If the mother has been killed

you need to hand the ducklings over to rescue ppl to save yourself getting in any bother ..

Hope you find the mother... If she is alive and well, she would be going frantic calling them

Duckmad, you are misinterpreting. It's not people "against it" it's people trying to keep the OP from getting into trouble.
