I've been having problems with one of my hens. I noticed her eye looked aweful about a week or so ago, and, after I got home from vacation, it spread to her other eye and her comb. It look aweful, and I feel so bad for her. She doesn't seem too bothered by it, she's eating and drinking. My local Tractor Supply said it looked like fowl pox. If that's what it is, how to I treat her? The woman working suggested Tylon and VetRX but I not know if that's what she needs. Can someone help?

Yeah it looks like a case of fowl pox. We have it running through the flock at the moment. I've heard Betadine helps when applied to the sores. I just let it run it's course.

Oh really? It won't kill her right? This is the first case of it I've had in my flock

Theres no treatment for dry pox. Have you looked inside her mouth to see if its wet pox ? Thats worse for them. There will be like a yellow plaque inside if its wet. Can she see ?

Yes, she can see, and no I haven't looked in her mouth yet. She doesn't sound raspy or anything, and it sounds like she's breathing fine but I'll make sure to check. And also, you can't do anything to at least help? I've read that you can use iodine and triple-antibiotic ointment to help it clear up

@granny hatchet I looked in her mouth this evening and I got something gummy on my finger, but from the best I could tell, the inside of her mouth was fine.

you can dab the iodine to help dry them faster but its going to run its course. Dont put it by her eye. If she cant see use the antibiotic on the scabs on the eyes. Making sure you dont use any with "cain" aka pain reliever in it. Its toxic . It will probably spread through the flock before its over with. Keep an eye that she is eating good. I would separate her if possible . Re check her mouth in a few days.

Thank you so much for the help! I've never dealt with fowl pox before, so this helped so much. Apart from the sores, she's acting as if nothing's wrong with her. I'll be sure to keep an eye on her and add vitamins to her water.

Topical antibiotics may help with any secondary bacterial infection,
but fowl pox is viral.
