My neighbor, just across the road, had a couple birds with what we think is the wet form of fowl pox. One has the yellowish gunk in the mouth and another that has it down its throat from the back of the tongue on down. The second is having trouble breathing from the gunk growing over its breath tube. A few others that have had it have recovered and now seem to be prefectly healthy. 3-4 got running swollen eyes, but nothing in the mouth. They recovered in a week or so from first noticible symptoms. He said he put a couple down because they were suffocating like the second one above, but worse. We first thought is was canker and have been treating with the canker tablets. We think those were just staving off possible secondary infection.
Our local farm supply carries the Fowl Pox Vaccine for $7, they also
have most other Vaccines. I am picking it up for him in the morning. He has close to 200 birds that I will be helping him with.
*questions for those that know:
1. We plan to Vac every bird even those that were already infected and recovered. Since he doesn't keep detailed records we are not sure exactly which birds were the ones that recovered. Would it be bad to Vaccinate a bird that already had Pox?
2. What about already symptomatic birds? Would it hurt them further to Vaccinate. I know it probably won't help, but will it make them worse?
3. I am assuming that I need to do my 90 birds as well. Since he is just a stones through away and the next neighbor over has roaming Peas that go EVERYWHERE.
4. Any problems with the Vaccine? Can the virus spread from a vaccinated bird? Like if I show in a couple months, will I be putting other's birds at risk? If so, I won't show. I just need to know.
5. What does the Pox vaccine do to a healthy bird? Do they show any symptoms or get sick like a kid that just had vaccines?
