Just wanted to post a followup for posterity --
Our injured bird seems to be recovering just fine. We put her back in with her remaining flock mate late in the second day after the attack, because she was perked up and calling for company, and they seemed to comfort each other, with minimal pecking from the uninjured flockmate. I didn't mess with the wound any more just peeked at the scabs I could easily see and sniffed closely a bit to make sure there wasn't any infection working anywhere.
Interestingly, the fox has been back repeatedly. It dug up the pullet we buried next to the compost pile -- it must have a great sense of smell, we'd buried it a foot and a half deep. And it has returned to dig there several times more. Must be hoping it's a magic chicken hole. I think it also came back into the garage one night, before we'd closed up for the night, but the birds started alarm calling and I ran downstairs, apparently scaring it off. It took them quite a while to settle down, though.
We block the dog-door at night. I don't know if the fox would go through it, but I don't want to take the chance. (As a result, our little dog sometimes does her business in the garage, but it's a minor problem, in the grand scheme of things.)
Posting this in case others are in the same situation and wondering about how much wound care to do....
