QUESTION: What antibiotic should I give her? I dressed the open flesh wounds with neosporin and gauze, have her in a box in my kitchen with water with vitamins. She is in complete shock though and is just starting with her mouth open. Not drinking. I am guessing I need to give her an oral antibiotic. I only have Corrid and Neomycin Sulfate on hand. Will either of those work or should I try to find something else?

Anything else I can do so she can survive this?

I would not dress the wound, also make sure she has electrolytes in the water it is good for shock. I would not do antibiotics unless I started to see signs of infection. Antibiotics well not do anything for shock

Well, the wound dressing came off anyway. She has about 4 wide open teeth bite wounds and is missing feathers about everywhere. She is eating a little now. I gave her some children's advil.

Still in shock though.

Advil cannot be given to chickens. The only pain medication that has been fully tested and deemed safe is aspirin. The dose is 325 mg/gallon.

I would not give an antibiotic unless she has an infection. The most effective antibiotic on wounds is Pen G injectible. Most of the water soluble meds are useless for something of this nature.

Ok- Well, I won't be giving her any more advil.... She seems fine now. I didn't give her any antibiotics either. But she does have some large flesh wounds, although she is with the rest of the flock now and is walking around and eating.

If you have not blu-koted her, and are not out there with her CONSTANTLY, I very strongly encourage you to keep her separated. All it will take is ONE hen to notice those wounds and it will be all over.

Agree. She needs to be separated for her safety.

She's usually the leader of the group and I haven't noticed any of the others pecking her at all, but I'll keep my eye out. That would be horrible if they were to turn on her.

It comes in a spray or a dauber. It goes on wounds to help discourage pecking. Chickens are attracted to blood and the color red. If they find those wounds on her, they'll peck her to death. The blue/purple color of blue kote masks the red color, making it less attractive to the other chickens. Tractor Supply carries it for sure. I have both the spray and the dauber and I've found the spray is harder to control where you put it. It stains everything, so make sure you wear something old that you don't care if it never comes out in the wash!
