A fox recently took my only large rooster while I wasn’t home. And unfortunately we couldn’t find his body, but we found two fox dens while following the the trail of feathers that was left behind. He was a large silkie rooster and pictures of him are shown below. Is there any way I can keep it away without killing it? All suggestions are welcome! R.I.P Birdie. Thank you for protecting the girls for me 🫶🕊️

I'm sorry to write the short answer is no.
I assume this happened in daylight (?)
Are your chickens free range for part or the whole of the day?

My flock free ranges from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM every day. I’m assuming it happened about 4 or 6 PM, it did happen in daylight. I do have neighbors who have guns, so I’m hoping I won’t be the one shooting the fox. Thank you for your response!

I agree with @Shadrach and @sourland there is no way to keep it away so please pen your birds up safely. The fox will be back, they are creatures of habit.

I had an attack and the fox came back for 3 consecutive days looking for more birds until it was shot. I learned my lesson after that and made things more secure.

I have kept my girls inside unless I’m out with them, until I can be sure that their roof on their pen is secure and fox proof, I won’t be letting them outside without me being with them, my neighbors have found the two dens, and I’m planning to buy a gun to get it over with. I have motion sensor lights on the pen, I will be buying one for the back of the coop where I found the feathers. Both pens are secure with hardware cloth over the regular metal wire, and there is some in the ground so it cannot dig underneath it. I’m going to make sure my girls and my other boys are safe and secure, until then I won’t be taking my eyes off of them while they’re outside.

Right now fox are feeding kits and are vigorously hunting. It may be necessary to pen your birds if you can not/will not kill the fox.
I’m planning on buying a gun, I was going to buy a paintball gun but realized if I shot it it would suffer and die in the woods, attracting more predators to kill my girls. I’ve kept them in their coop unless I’m outside watching them, I’ve kept an eye out for paw prints, as it has been muddy and raining, but I haven’t seen any. Until I’m sure it’s dead, I won’t be taking my eye off of my girls.
