Fox killed all my chickens, in one night!

Your distance problem I have as well. Predator can come in, birds give alarm calls, and I do nothing because windows are closed blocking sound. Dog much better at detecting alarms but still has limits when he is inside. I am moving dog out next to outer (farther from house) coops and roosts.

For fun I will also be setting up webcams with microphones. This may help bird safety as well.

If possible, a cheap baby monitor (we're still using the same old Safety-First $20.00 unit that has been in coop for 6yrs) is useful. With two caveats: ya gotta be at home and, wake up when the hens start growling/whining.
