omigosh, I'm soo upset! My gorgeous, sweet, amazing, energetic, funny, acrobatic little Silver Spangled hamburg rooster was killed just a few hours ago. It took a hen, I chased it with me dogs as it dragged her down the hillside, my dogs caught up with it, it dropped the hen ands ran, I picked her up to make sure she was okay and my dogs sat down next to me because I told them to. I didn't want my neighbor to shoot them if they followed the fox onto his property, he has trespassing issues. I heard a HUGE commotion behind me, and either a second fox came or the first on circled back, and he was fighting Colonel (thats the SSH). Colonel was protecting the hens, he got HUGE and was fighting the dog with everything he had. the dogs shot forward and the fox made one last grab at Colonel, breaking his neck. I saw him gasp and flop. it was TERRIBLE. as my dogs and I gave chase, I shouted t my brothers to put the chickens in the coop. as the fox rand through the flock, it grabbed another Partridge Wyandotte and slung both birds over it's shoulder, like he was carrying a sack. My dogs and I pursued it for two hours, miles into the woods, my awesome hounds just moments behind. we came to a river and that's where it got stick. we could no longer hear the partridge screaming, and the dogs lost the scent. a few minutes later, the dogs found it a ways down on the opposite bank (he must have run down the stream). We were just following a trail of blood and gorgeous black and white and iridescent green feathers. we finally got to it's burrow, and my dogs dug and dug but couldn't get anywhere. I had my dad's gun, and I shot to see if I could scare it out, but the powder had gotten wet when we were splashing down the stream. chickens gone.

I am so sorry about your loss, but applaud your persistence. You certainly gave that fox the scaring of his life. And... you know where it lives.

Good luck.

Hope you get the Fox. Ever hear the saying Sly Fox? There's a reason for that. Their fast, very aware of any changes in surroundings, and scent. Very hard to trap for those reasons. I was cleaned out of 12 ducks in a week before I even saw what it was. I don't let my chickens free range until 9:30 a.m.,and have them in well before dark in a secure coop. If it carried the chicken that far it probably has pups. More cases than not,IT WILL BE BACK! Read up on traping Foxes on the net, There's alot of informaton on it out there. Good Luck.

Sorry about your losses. Thank you for posting the description of the attack (brazen/multiple kills). A pair will take out a flock of thirteen in less than twenty minutes (and carry them off), as happened to our neighbor's girls.

I would guess the foxes will be moving their den (too bad - easy to burn out or bury if they don't have an opportunity to relocate). They will, alas, as others have mentioned, be back.

They are easy to shoot when attacking as they pay little attention to the sound of the weapon being fired if they've tasted blood (will just keep trying until dropped), they are difficult to trap (have had good luck with snares, but shoot more than than I'll ever snag).

Best of luck (six foot fencing is very good).
