Okay, I just went out the feed my animals and my male duck, Uno, was making wierd rasping noises. I went up to him and there was a little piece of straw hanging by his neck. I took it out and therre was blodd on it and all over Uno's neck. So i took him inside and we put anti-biotic stuff on it along with gauze and duct tape (not too tight!). I put him in a little cage in our garage with his girlfriend, Cricket, in the cage next to him. He's still making rasping noises and we think it MIGHT have hurt his windpipe or something

The vet is closed right now (a big snowstorm coming) but if he's not better tomarrow, we are going to take him to the vet but in the meantime, is there anything else I can do? Also, he has eaten stuff since so that is a good thing

What I think happened:
Uno is very territorial and he lives in a large dog run kennel thing with the chickens and our goat. He often goes up to the goat and bites her, so the goat will ram him and he gets tossed in the air (but he asks for it). I had just put hay in the kennel for the goat and the ducks were playing in it. I THINK the duck might have bit the goat and got rammed into a sharp piece of hay

or possibly got stepped on by the goat.
Yes, I know many of you will say that the goat is bad to have with the other aniamls but they have been together in there for over 2 years and they have never had a serious problem. Hopefully this spring the goat will get a new barn built for her away from the ducks, but until then, there is nothing I can do about it

Anyway, does anyone have any advice?

Hopefully he's just scraped on the outside & bruised on the inside of his neck. I would give him vitamins & soft food, and rescue remedy flower essence if you have it, & keep him warm. I haven't had ducks or geese for years, so hopefully a duck person will answer with current knowledge.

I once kept ducks & geese & chickens with goats with no problem til a baby goat jumped out of the feeder onto a baby goose (I think that's what happened).
Now they have separate housing but the chickens free range so they can go in the goat pen if they want.
I had to retrieve the silkies from the goat bed several nights in a row this year before they started going to bed in their own house again. Stubborn little guys.

I dont know what to tell you..just keep him calm and warm and quiet tonight and see how he is in the morning.
Ya gotta not put him back in with that goat again..if the goat is ramming him..he can kill him very easily...
Good luck! I hope he gets well!
