I had a Wyandotte on 5 babies. This morning, I went out to check on them and clean their area (they're in an isolation pen in the big coop), and one of the babies had gotten its foot caught in mama's feathers, and in the panic, the poor thing lost its little leg and died. The leg was still in mama's feathers when I found it. I'm devastated...

I checked mama's underside, and she had plucked some feathers but still had a lot. I trimmed them out of paranoia that I'd lose another one that way.

So awful. In all my years, I've never had that happen.

Just had to get it off my chest. 😭💔

Oh, no I am sorry for your loss. It seems to me that I read about another hen who had some broken egg yolk on her that that happened to with one of her chicks.,
I thought that's what it was, but nothing on those feathers at all. I think they were just too long maybe? Ugh. I will have nightmares tonight.

I've heard of this happening when incubated chicks are given feather dusters to snuggle with but I had no idea it could happen with real hens. So, so sad.
Me, too. And she's a good mama. I wish I'd gone out sooner. I might've gotten there in time.
