I went to go close up the coop door about 8:30 tonight. I stepped inside, put some young gals on the roost since they haven't quite learned that they need to do that quite yet. I was checking on my 4 broody gals and I lifted up the one on the end... and... and... SNAKE! I about wet my pants! How can a hen just let a snake get underneath her! I ran to the barn (in the almost dark... and in my PJs), grabbed a shovel and a fishing net. I went back into the coop, lifted the broody off and just went to town on that snake with my shovel. I didn't kill it, but I know I had to hurt it. It took off like a streak of lightning. Next time, snakie, next time...

I have had a MAJOR snake problem this summer! Okay...4 snakes all summer, but to me 1 snake is a major problem!

I can not believe she was just sitting on it!!!! I would have wet myself for sure!

Maybe the snake was just looking for a nice warm place to hide... and was waiting for an egg to eat.

I would have screamed like a 3 year old girl - and THEN got my shovel or whatever was handy for snake killing. Freak-Out indeed!

So, will snakes go into the nest boxes and just take the eggs and not bother the birds? I had something stealing eggs, but not bothering my chickens... Our only 2 pests we could come up with was a snake or rat. I thought that the snake would eat the chickens on the ground (I have seramas that choose to sleep on a lower "perch") rather than go all the way up into the nest box. That and my hen is sitting on eggs in the box, so it had to go under her to get them! Also, there was never any evidence left behind like shell pieces or anything, so I know they were being taken... Sorry for kind of butting in here!

I would not have appreciated finding a snake under my hen that for sure!
