Freak Out of the Day....

I know how you feel.

Early last year I was gathering eggs. I slid my hand under a big Buff Cochin hen that was on a nest. Her leg felt swollen. The scales were very prominant and the leg was over an inch thick. I pushed up, lifting the hen sideways to check her leg.

Something was tickling my hand.

About that time everything became clear.

I had my hand wrapped around a Black Rat Snake. It was looking at my hand and tickling me with it's TONGUE!!!

Needless to say, I LET GO and jerked my hand out from under the hen. I ran for a hoe alot faster then someone my size normally could. When I got back to the hen house I jerked the hen straight up off the nest and ran the snake out. I did kill it. Any snake that takes eggs or chicks is a goner. That one was 64" long.

Before that I have never had a fear of snakes, but now I have an aversion to them.

Yes they will go right under a hen. Rats will too but they leave the shell behind. The egg will have a dime sized hole in it where they access the insides.

I like the snakes, course I don't do anything with my eggs usually we eat them when we get them but usually I let the chickens eat them.

I hope I never, ever, never, ever, never experience that!!! I seriously imagine my family would be calling 911 for me. Ugh!

oh my stars - that would be enough to make me give up the chickens for good. And I really love my hens. I just can't do snakes...

I GOT HIM! I went snake hunting in the coop last night and he met his fateful end. He was behind the nest boxes this time. He probably actually never left the coop.
