Ok everyone, one of my GLW's layed this today and I'm kinda worried, it is oblong, slightly cracked on the small end and has blood on it! I lost a Buff Orpington a couple of weeks ago that had just started laying, only 3 eggs from her that were shaped like this one, but never any blood on it, she ended up dying from prolapse that I didn't notice until it was too late. Should I be worried that this is happening to my GLW?

It's okay. Sometimes they leave some blood as the cloaca stretches out. I see it in new layers or those starting back up.

All my Wyandotte no matter the variety lay oblong eggs, seems to be a breed trait.

Hens stand up to push the eggs out. If your nests aren't well bedded they can crack when hitting the box.

Thank you, was hoping it wasn't a huge concern, and I thought I had enough bedding in the nesting boxes, but I'm going to add more.

Often new layers will scratch the bedding out or scratch a bare center. New layers are always a pain, but a welcome pain.

It is alarming, but can happen once in awhile to any aged bird.
You're probably keeping a good eye on vents after the prolapse,
when in doubt-check it out.
OMG, I'm a basket case after the prolapse......I'm now a regular butt checker daily....lol....
