Your situation would put me on prozac as well! I sympathize. Here is my 2 cents worth. I would call the pound or local dog catcher on all the dogs, even the strays. I would call your MIL ( or better have your hubby call)and tell her that either she removes the dogs or they go for a ride with the dog catcher. Then she will have to deal with them. If she hates you already then what can it hurt. The stray dog I for sure would get the pound to deal with. For all you know it could have rabies. It doesnt matter if your MIL agrees with what you do in your yard. It is YOUR YARD. She cant punish you like a kid by leaving the dogs there. I am pretty sure it is illegal in some way for her to just leave them there. It is not her property and they are harassing your animals. Hang in there and we are all rooting for you. I know that it is hard dealing with family that is uncooperative. I am glad that mine dont live next door. LOL

Since you are willing to pay have for an underground dog fence, which won't help with strays, why not pay half for a real fence? I've always been told that if you don't want other folks critters, or strays, in your yard, fence them out.
So are you saying you live next to your MIL and FIL? So it was the MIL that said she didnt want you getting chickens and the dogs would just have to get used to the chickens? FIL has prostrate cancer so you could potentially be living next to MIL only if FIL passes away due to health? Do you or your hubby own this land next to the inlaws?
If the above is correct, I agree with the MIL that the dogs need to get used to the chickens (and you/son) but due to the past history, she better take a proactive approch to this. It doesnt seem like she is taking any action, just trying to punish you for getting chickens. Inform her and FIL that the problem better get taken care of or it will likely take care of itself. Put the pellet gun away, its virtually useless in this situation. There are much better ways to take care of this.
Have you ever had an animal turn on you when you shot them with a pellet gun. I have been a little nervous around dogs since my son and I got attacked.
When I was a kid I pointed at a dog and told him to go away, he attacked me, biteing me and chaseing me.
I am not afraid of dogs but I know that some dogs are unpredictable.
As an adult, I got out of my car one day, had the baby inside the car and there wa a neighbors rotweiler in my yard.
Leaving the baby in the car, a took a few steps and reached for my shovel.
The dog started to run at me......
Raiseing the shovel I ran strait for that dog...
Its a good thing the dog was smart enough to turn and run the other way, or it would be dead.... be aware that when you challenge a dog, you may need to finish the job or get to safty if you can't, some dogs havent had that bread out of them.
I would say that those are the exceptions and not the rule, Ive owned dogs most of my life. The one when i was a kid was the only dog ive ever encounterd that reacted that way. But you never know.
Always keep a shovel close by when there are dogs or mothers-in -law around
Good Gawd girl. Get that pellet gun out and use it on all the dogs. Don't ask MIL permission either. Her dawgs howling in her backyard might get her lazy behind off the couch. And also, where's yer hubby in dealing with this monster?? No backbone or balls?? Chickflick and myself are going to come on down and give you grump lessons.
Also, get hardware cloth to line the bottem of your coop run so chicks can't stick there heads out. Beckyla is right, invest in a fence!!
second thought call the dog catcher have them take both dogs. Or get a bigger gun and take care of it for good. Shoot, shovel, and shut up, been there and done it.
I almost didn't reply to this post as your in-laws made me so mad!!! Their dog tried to attack their grand child??? All I could suggest is fencing around your yard so the dogs couldn't get in but Expensive!!!!
