All very logical, Mail addresses are meant to be read backwards. If you mailed a postcard home the sorter would throw in in the usa bin, when it got to the US, someone would throw it in the bin going to the distribution center that services hannibal MO. sort by ZIP and eventually sorted for home delivery at 1234 main street apt A.
I have been emailing a person in Australia for years she lives in the "outback" near Melbourne (city)Victoria (state). They use several different date systems, as does the USA.
