me and my DH do a paper route and sunday morning we were going about buisness like always and in the middle of the road thier were about 10-15 pumkins( looks like some one had them on the truck and they fell off ) so of course we pulled over and grabbed as many as we could fit in our little car along with our papers, some of them barely had a crack in them - so some were used for decoration and the others were cut in half and given to the animals, ny chickens went crazy, ducks had a blast, even gave some to the dogs they were not so crazy for them.
so far none of our animals have had any problems from eating them.

I love mixing into my chicken's diet lots of random different foods with lots of different textures. It helps keep them guessing! I rigged up a ramp that goes onto the top of my chicken coop so the birds can up there and bask in the sunlight, and a few days ago I put an old pumpkin up there. They loved it! I built my coop around a apple tree so that the apples fall right into the coop, giving them lots of stimulation and things. My flock's favorite foods are cucumbers, carrots, but most of all bread. Defientely save the pumpkins! The chickens love them! So much so however that during the before Halloween time when I actually wanted my pumpkin to be on my porch (my chickens gave me this funny look like why would you just want to look at it? Let's eat!) I couldn't let the birds free-range because they would attack the pumpkin. LoL!

Good for you for keeping the pumpkins out of the landfills!

I often stop by the local deli, at the end of the day, and pick up rolls that otherwise get dumpstered. Makes me very popular with the chickens!

So many restaurants just toss out food that the chickens adore. They get fed interesting treats and the restaurants reduce feeding the landfills and rats. A nice win/win.

No potatoes though. Ever. But they love the occasional fish skin.
