Free range chickens question

Magadalene,

I have had free range chickens for, um…. 4-5 yrs? I feed my chickens, Scratch, cracked corn, (whatever I can afford that month) PLUS, moths I catch & store in small jars, whatever is wiped from the counter, leftovers from meal prep, they can SAFELY eat, THEIR OWN EGG SHELLS. My Loose horses mean LOTS of bugs in each poop pile. A BIG reason I started with Chickens was due to BUG Control. Before having my girls, one step, anywhere on 20 acres, would cause about 50-75 grasshoppers to fly. ONE STEP!

There is tons of info on this site but chickens have been around for 1,000,000s of years. It sounds like despite your Rooster's rank issues, YOU ARE DOING a GREAT job. There aren't a lot of folks still 'allowing' their flock to free range but looking at your place, you have it made! Protective foliage, bldgs, etc..

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! We need more Free rangers out here!

You may want look up the history of chickens, chickens have only been around for about 9,000 years.
Man bred the chicken from jungle fowl breeds.
