free range: forest vs. pasture?

Mine are in the woods behind our place. They see the hawk coming before anything else does.....so far anyway. I figure someday, one of them will get plucked off. But so far, so good. The hanging CDs have kept the hawks away from the open area and yard/run area. But they hide out pretty well in the woods too. Come back to lay eggs and drink during the day. AND get treats!

Pop, I'm not "worried" about there diet, I am just trying to learn as much as possible prior to embarking on this venture.
Predation is most definitely a concern. Thank you for the well wishes!

Mine love to forage around in the leaf litter more than anything else. As others have said, they just love looking for all the little creatures underneath the leaves. They also like to spend some time in the sunnier areas, eating grass and other leafy greens. The leaf litter is their all time favorite, though. I think that's why they are so polite when they're in my flower beds. The other areas of leaf litter are better for a good, scratching, forage fest.

My free range flock also sticks close to the woods. They come out and pick around in the pasture in the later evening hours.
