If you keep your quail in cages, and during the day they free range outside - do you have any problems getting them back into their cages at night ( and locking them in for safety)? Also does it upset them because one day every so often they cannot go outside? I can't leave them out if I have to go into town for the day etc.

I keep my Quail in cages. Everything I’ve read about free ranging them says that if you let them free range they more then likely are just going wander off, or jump over a fence. If you want them to have a lot of space I’d probably make them a big run. The thing about quail is you need they’re run to have a roof over it otherwise they’d jump out, which means you can‘t really just fence off a massive part of your yard either. My quail have a small coop (with a run attached) that they sleep in at night. If you have a run you‘re quail are way easier to take care of. I have an automatic light (I had one that I turned on and off but I kept forgetting to turn it off) in my Quails coop, they love it. My Quail do escape sometimes when I am grabbing stuff out of they’re coop, or giving them treats, they are not that hard to get back in, I still wouldn’t recommend free ranging.

Also, :welcome
