Oregon blues makes the point I thought of when reading the OP.
Foraging there would likely kill your chickens or at least make them sick and I wouldn't eat the eggs.
Good fencing saves lots of headaches.
Take it from someone learning the hard way.
At first they don't venture far from the coop but eventually they get braver.
