"free range" vs chicken coop

I have my chickens in a chicken tractor. It's an enclosed house with completely covered run that has the ability to be moved. It was built of 90% recycled materials- purchased hardware cloth and padlocks. It keeps the girls contained and safe while I am busy and at night. During the day I let them free-range while I am out. They are moved every 3-7 days depending on how much they muck up their run space, so they constantly get a new pasture to graze. It has worked out so well that I intend to build another tractor next year for my next batch of chickens. People have asked me why I don't put them in a permanent spot and I have to say the reason is that their eggs taste better when they constantly have fresh grass to graze on, but I can't free-range all the time because I live next to a wildlife corridor. I would have no hens left if I allowed them to free-range unattended. I feel the tractor is the best of all options.

Good luck.
