"Free Range" vs. Free Range

I currently free range my chickens (no fences, no nothing) yet I am starting to rethink because they are venturing closer and closer to the road front yard...

If I do fence them in, however, it will still be a LARGE area, just with a fence around it. That's not technically 'free range' but they are still provided with access to bugs, worms, grass, etc, and it sure is a heck of a lot better than commercial chicken farms.

Mine also started migrating a bit when the first frost hit. My guess is that they had to go a little farther to find the same quantity of bugs. Mine go in a coop for protection at night but have several acres to themselves through the day. Not great for getting all the girls to lay eggs in the nest boxes. Lately I've been using coop and covered run till about 2pm and then letting them out untill they go in on their own. They aren't migrating as far and I'm getting more eggs.
