Free Range with dogs...

doesn't work if they are natural "killers". ie Labs, German shepherds ect. Once they have killed, it;s in their blood. I lost 3 again yesterday during supper.

We watched our 3 dogs calmly walking around behind the cat just waiting for him to drop them a "treat". When the cat was new and in the house we were concerned about his bowel movements... he didn't seem to have any or was he depositing them else where? Then we realized the dogs were cleaning the litter box for us, ugh it was gross!! The dog doo and the chickens never crossed our minds. The pony manure, however, get either eaten by the dogs or racked in by the chickens.

There are always exceptions. I have a lab and a german shepherd, that are very good with my chickens. The German Shepherd had killed chickens before, at my house. I corrected the behavior and they know that the chickens are mine, and are not to be eaten. They are trusted with them, and have been outside alone with them all day everyday for months with no casualties (sp?). However, I am not naive, if something were to happen and the dog killed again it would be my fault. It depends on the dog, not really the breed.

Both the dogs love to eat chicken poo, but I've never seen the chickens touch the dog poo, but if they did, it would be like any other gross thing they eat.

No offense but I have a strong dislike for people with your kind of thinking. Labs and German Shepherds are no more natural killers than yorkie's and chihuahua's. Its like the people who think all pitbulls are vicious. They are just like all other dogs. With different traits of course. In the right environment pitbulls and any other dogs can be amazing companions. I have both a German Shepherd and a Rottweiler together with my chickens. Never have I had a problem. Just wish I could get the rottie to stop eating the chicken poop.
