Free Range with dogs...

I THINK I'm glad my dogs eat the chicken poop rather than roll in it. I THINK.

My chickens ignore the dog poop, too. It's a big yard and I just let the rain wash it in.

Can we conclude by the preponderance of postings that chickens have CONSIDERABLY better table manners than our beloved dogs?!

Mine seems chagrined each time we catch him...but that doesn't stop him from sampling the chicken chips every chance he gets!

dogs are so gross... and we let them sleep in our beds instead of the chickens??? lol

mine like the chicken poo also... and will occasionally go to the neighbors and find a dried cow pie or horse nugget. blech!

My chickens are in their run so I don't know how they'd be with the dog poo around... just wanted to comment on the dogs' grossness! lol

I can't imagine why dog poop would be any different than bug guts, worms, cow poop, etc. I've never actually seen my free ranged chickens scratching through the doggy do, but I doubt I would be concerned about it. Its not like it doesn't process into the proper nutrients during the digestive process.

It would be just another form of protein. Sort of like the protein they consume while using the deep litter method. Their meat or eggs don't carry the taste of the other nasty items they eat, so I can't imagine it would really matter in the long run.

One of our DD's couldn't have a dog where she was living so she left her dog with us. The dog had free range of our property with the birds. This dog could have cared less about the chickens. Since we have several acres the chickens didn't seem to bother with the dog poop, but they loved scratching in the horse manure.

We let our flock of 7 free range in our yard usually twice a day. They have never even looked twice at the dog droppings.

But, then I usually clean the yard once a day. I'm horrified to admit that Boomer, our 5 yr old Doxie has been caught acting shall I say a little to interested in the chicken's contributions to the yard.

But then again, why should I be surprised, we've nicknamed him Kitty Rocha Boy..

We've since relocated the cat box...

My chickens aren't the least bit interested in the dog poop. And surprisingly, the dogs have shown no interest in the chicken poop.

I bet if the chickens found a pile of bear poop they'd be all over it, though. My son asked me once "Why does HQs poop have corn in it?" Ummm ... that's because it's not the dogs poop ... it's bear poop! LOL

My dog is very protective of the chooks, and good companion in the yard. We do have a few chicken eating "critters" around, and the chooks are in their coop / run when I am not at home, but I feel security factor is increased when the dog is out with them. He does like the chicken poop, too. So far as I know, the chooks have not encounterd dog poop, as the dog uses a seperate area of the yard, not normally accessable to the chooks, for this function.
