Free Range

Welcome to BYC! When you are sure they are used to their coop, I think you can let them out to free range and they will return to their home. I suggest first doing it an hour or two before bedtime, as they will naturally want to go in to roost.
What I have seen is that my chickens of all ages will carefully orient themselves when first set free, so they can find their way back.

Howdy :frow and Welcome to Backyard Chickens.

Free ranging is something you will have to decide on your own. You'll need to weigh the pros and cons, especially if you have lots of predators to contend with in your area. There's hundreds of designs for tractor coops, here! as well as other ideas for protecting "free ranged" birds.
Wish you the best in luck with your flock.

Thanks for joining our community! :celebrate
