Free ranging for the first time

Oh gosh... Dang hawk. We just saw a falcon in our yard eating a chipmunk the cat killed. The first free range is great! Its a blast getting to just sit out on the picnic table and watch the chooks do their scratching and clucking.

Ahhh, Yea...Hawks are a bummer! I live in an open field so Ive gotta keep a very good eye on my girls when they do free range. Tho, the hawks haven't showed in some time...Thats a good thing! But its winter now, so the girls stay in their run!

Good luck!

We freerange under supervision for precisely that reason. I am the hawk deterent while the girls are busy in the yard. I have had several hawks fly through but not come to close as I was standing or walking around with them. I also like to sit and watch them while they are freeranging. If you are worried, just freerange them when you can be out with them.

LOL I didn't let my first silkies free range until they were a good 6 months old

I was so worried something might happen to them...

The girls were so happy to be out! I watched them for awhile and then went inside to do some chores When I came back they had tucked themselves back into the coop. Such good chickens. I'm sure it will get a little easier each time...I just want to protect them.

This morning I let the girls out again and we weeded the flower garden together. They were the best helpers! I threw them slugs and they came along behind me doing clean up. They were raised on a farm so aren't very 'pet like'. But today they were crowding me and shoving me out of the way to get to the weeded areas. Happy chickens!
