I am a newbie on here and raising 6 hens, 2 guineas and 2 roosters for the first time. My chickens are free rangers by day and was wondering....since there really are no bugs or vegetation in the winter, do I still allow them to forage or should I just feed them in their chicken run instead?

Thanks for any help given,

You would be surprised what they can find to eat during your winters. The number of creepy crawlies may be down but there is still a lot of vegetative matter out there for them. I keep feed in the run for mine, but they still spend a lot of time foraging.

If my chickens can find stuff worth scratching out in midwinter in upstate NY yours certainly will in VA.
