Free Ranging Peafowl?

How old are your peas?
how many do you have?
Did you raise them there?
Tell us about your place , like how much land, do you have visible neighbors from the tree tops or ground?
Do you stay home most of the time, like retired or stay at home parent?

Three months
Three
Yes
Fifty acres of field and some trees and barns and cows in every direction
One visible neighbor from ground, (my stay at home grandpa)

I'm considering getting some peafowl myself.

I have 80 acres, closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away and his house is visible from the tree tops only.
Id like to free range.

Am going to look at week old chicks this week and also have the opportunity to purchase 3 year old mated pair. (I think the 3 year old adults may not be a good "free range" choice since they've always been caged.

I only work off the farm 3 or 4 days a month.

Both of you sound like you have the perfect place and the time to keep an eye on them till they learn where they belong.
What I did was keep mine well within my property so if they go past where I want them they are still on my place. Lots of footwork but teaching them but it is good because while doing this you build a bond with them and they learn how to be herded so if they do get off your place you will be able to either trap them or walk them back home if they do not come back on their own.

Peas are lots of fun, I walk with mine, I keep the hawks at bay and they understand this and when they see something we go togeather to check it out.

I will tell you more about how I deal with mine but right now I am wore slap trying to work in all this mud I got a bob cat trying to get in the area so been doing double rounds, so far it has not gotten diddley cause the dogs and I have seen it at the same time, however it has been back 2 days in a row and I fear I may have to take it out if hazing doesn't work, makes me sad but don't need my dogs tore up cause they are on high alert right now and I have 2 dogs that could catch it if they are close enough when they see it.

Spring has arrived (sort of) in ontario and my peas are happily free ranging with the rest of my birds....Even the 3 year old male that I got last fall who was raised in a pen is staying close to home and is returning to roost inside each evening. Yippee!!! My 3 little ones are positively delightful to watch...they crack me right up.

so where are the pretty pictures?

I have since I bought my peas 2 years ago. I started with 5 and lost 2. I've no idea to what. I had a male and female fly of and the male came back but not the female. Then I had a predator attack and one of the males flew off in a panic and never came back. So while mine are still free range and I've no intention of changing that, there are losses.
