Free Ranging+Shrubs=Bad idea?

I don't think my girls find any of my shrubs tastey enough to prune for me. Of course, anything I have growing in my yard has to be unappealing enough to survive the deer and groundhogs. Maybe the toughest are also the most tasteless or bitter to a chicken as well.
The biggest problem I have is with them scratching up the herbs on the borders of the beds.

Today was the first time my 8 13 week old pullets free ranged (because i was actually home to watch them for their first time out). They really seemed to be interested in the row of shrubs along the garage. Like they try eating leaves from it. The name of the shrub is "Cotoneaster". Does anybody know if this shrub is harmful to chickens? I really want to free range them more but i can't ALWAYS be standing there shoo-ing them away from the shrubs. Any ideas? Thanks so much!
Pretty my hen ate some cotoneaster and now her wings are limp and she keeps scratching her egg nest. She also keeps panting while her other peers arent!
