Thanks again for all of the advice and support!
I am thrilled to be getting into the chicken-world and I simply cannot wait for my fuzzy little chickies to arrive. Unfortunately, we're waiting until mid June to get the peeps (already on order!!) since we have a major camping trip coming up in early June that takes a TON of preparation for and we don't want to saddle my MIL with the job of caring for peeps on top of taking care of our cats and ferrets.
We're now considering the design on thegardencoop.com for our coop, and are planning on situating it against the little tree line at the back of our yard just outside of our kitchen. The spot is fairly level, shaded for most of the afternoon, on high ground so no standing water issues, and will keep our girls close to the house but far enough for local regulations. Thoughts?? Suggestions??
What would you all recommend as far as yard substrate? I've read a lot of different methods and am indecicive on what to go with. Right now, we're liking the sound of using sand and treating it like another big litter box once the gals clear the foliage that is there. I also like the idea of planting some sort of vine-plant like peas or something to grow up the side of the run so that when it grows through the wire, the girls would have something interesting to munch on. Thoughts??
