We are wondering what our free rare chick is going to be. We made sure all the chicks we ordered are cold hardy and extremely docile pullets, and our imaginations are running wild with the idea that we're going to get an aggressive roo. If you've ordered from McMurray, can you share with us what your free rare chick has been?

I did this last year to get a lot of layers in one fell swoop. the free mystery chick was a partridge cochin hen. her name is lauren, after the Glee character.

They also sent extra buff silkies, all hens, which isnt bad since theyre all straight run, and a super cute dark cornish bantam roo. I thought it was great getting a lot of freebies.

Other years weve gotten silver spangled hamburg hen, polish, australorp, but always something fun. (kids named SSH hen Tiny Dalmatian

) Good luck and enjoy your chicks!

I got an order last spring that on the order it showed there was a rare chick. But there wasn't one in the box! I was dissapointed. But didn't complain about it. One less bird to feed and probably would have been a roo that I didn't need.

My neighbor and I order chicks from McMurray earlier this month. The first batch they sent a tee tiny polish that would have matured as a black with a white top hat. Unfortunately, we lost 11 chicks - including him. The weather was bad but I think he did not survive because he was sooooooooooo little compared to all the other chicks. We ordered large, dual purpose breeds and I think he got trompled. We received these chicks 2/7/11.

Our 2/14/11 batch we got a nice large mystery chick. I beleive this one is a buff brahma - it is blackish with dark golden fluff and has feathered legs. It looks like the chicks on the video for that breed on McMurray's website.

We also got an extra male in the first order and 2 extra males in the second order.

I got the same free exotic chick today - white crested black polish. I had a lot of Cornishes and the same thing probably happened with it too. It's the first one that's died so far. Would have been so neat if it had made it!

Shipping took four days - so they weren't exactly peachy when they got here either. Also got an extra chick. I ordered one of the assortments and they just gave me an additional one from there.

There seems to be a wide variety of mystery chick breeds. I like that! We cancelled the white-crested black Polish chicks from our order. Now it looks like we may end up with one anyway! I wouldn't mind a Buff Brahma... that was one of our back-up breeds for this order. Thanks, folks... please keep your mystery chick posts coming!

I posted our mystery chick in this area and another area on BYC to try and identify what kind of chicken he is. It looks like the concensus is a Partridge Cochin. I can't wait to see how he turns out!

Polish chicks are more fragile then other chicks. I lost several last year until I figured it all out. They do best with other polish chicks only. Sorry for your losses.
