Free Rnge

I have a 5ft fence surrounding my yard mostly either chainlink or welded wire 2x4" holes. When they are scratching around for bugs they mostly don't fly. The only time they fly up is to roost when it gets dark. I've had to remove a few from the fence line and put them in the coop, and two of them flew over to the neighbor's house once. Only one time. And these were the flightly Leghorns. My heavier reds never fly away.

Now they walk right through my cattle panel "gate" so I guess I'm gonna have to ziptie some chicken wire onto the bottom half of it

Mine have free ranged for a year now and never even tried flying anywhere. I had one fly over a 6 foot fence when she was young but now that she is a hen she doesn't do it anymore. I think they are a bit heavy for that once they are hens. The ones that do fly pretty good are the D'uccles. WOW those things can fly LOL

You could harvest what you want, pull up a lawn chair, and put them in the garden. You'll have some entertainment and they will enjoy it. The garden soil will be turned and fertilized some too. Be careful if you get hawks in your area. They will hunt in daylight. Have fun with the chicken tv.

Can I just say how much I LOVE chicken TV.
So this afternoon, I brought Genevive out. She is my EE, and she is the most docile, jumps up into my lap.
Set her up on the edge of a bed of bolted lettuce. Jumped right down and headed back to talk to the rest of the troop in the run. Finally got her to hang out on the edge of the bed, only if she was either sitting in my lap, or leaning against me. What a chicken !!!!!!

LOL.

Sounds like you are pretty secure. As said above if you "free range" in your garden you should be on site so you don't come home and your tomatoes, cucumbers, etc are pecked and unedible.
Your flock deems edible what you do not...
