Free Roosters?

We have too many Roos...12 to be exact. We have 5 black marans, 6 lavender orphingtons, and 1 blue lace red wyanadotte. Don't have decent pic of wyandotte (just fuzzy blurs).

They were hatched on March 13th. They came from Chicken Scratch Poultry Farm. Very pretty birds, just starting to crow (pathetic). We live in K.C. city limits, have to find them new homes in the next few weeks.

Almost 4 months old. Why wouldn't i want them to butcher? I am not gong to get them because i haven't purchased my chicken plucker yet. I see ads like this everyday and i am thinking about going ahead and purchase a Chicken plucker rathe than wait until next spring and my plan. I have plucked my share as a kid and don't want to anymore.

Because the "competition" for rooster give-a-ways is vast.
Because most flock keepers only desire a rooster for each 10-12 hens.
Because people want a specific breed, if they want a breeding rooster.
Because people, like you, live in the city and cannot have roosters.
Because people even in the country, often don't keep roosters in deference to close neighbors.
Because people who want meat birds don't want DP birds, they prefer true meat birds which take far less feed and mature twice as fast.

All things are not the same in all areas. But some of the above likely applies. I know it does here.

There are endless free roosters available around here, but too many people wait until they are too old to be good eating before they try to give them away. How many chicken and dumpling dinners will your family eat before they want something else?

Cost of feeding them isn't an issue, if you pick them up for free and butcher them right away. Cost of gasoline to go and pick them up is an issue and needs to be considered.

The ad you are quoting, tallgrass, would be a good one. multiple roosters just about the right age to butcher. If they weren't too far away and you could butcher them soon after you pick them up,

My issue with free birds is that I don't want to bring them onto my place and maybe introduce disease or bugs to my own birds.

By the way, you could go get them and skin instead of plucking. If you don't have much gas cost, for 12 of them, you could even breast them out and toss the rest of it. I hate the waste, but it won't cost you anything to throw part away.

I had 11 RIR roosters at 4 months old and 7 BSL roosters at 2 months old, sold every one of them. Figured I would have to put most of them in the freezer, but nope! Sold the RIRs for $5 each and the BSLs at $3 each.

Some of the RIRs were sold as flock roosters, most were sold for the stew pot.

Hi,
I'm interested your free or purchasing your roosters to supplement what I can't afford at the grocery store. Most of my groceries for my familty are from my home garden and p-path but still have to go to grocery for poultry which I often can't afford.
