These containers are listed as free on craigslist in Austin, TX right now: http://austin.craigslist.org/zip/1340101923.html The poster says they are free, and that they have more than you could want. If you take at least 5, they'll deliver them. 5 ftX8ftX7 feet tall. If I needed a new coop, I'd definitely give one of them a try!

wow!!! thats an awesome deal...excellent coops also...i mailed him Im outside Houston area, and we have a long trailer....wonder if he would meet us 1//2 way....
thanks for sharing, how in the heck did you find them? all day long I type in on CLs:

I built a couple of coops out of similar containers.

Pro:

cheap
easy to move around
small

Con:

spent more time and $$ on painting and furnishing the coops than I did on buying a used wooden shed and outfitting that later

you have to "service" each coop individually unless you have a central feed/water/nest area that all birds will have access to during the daytime hours, and the small coops need to be cleaned almost daily as there is not much space for poop to build up and you cannot use the deep litter method to any degree...plan on pooper scooping each coop daily

floor space is limited for the birds so you will have to conjure up feed and supply storage some other way

getting in and out of the coop is no easy task

That's what my nieghbor has. They put it standing tall. Works great!

I should also say, they have 20 chickens.

Just wondering what you mean? These things are 40 square feet by 7 feet tall, and one end is a 7 x 5 foot door. Why are they hard to get in and out of? If it were me, I'd put a run off the end opposite the door, add on a nest box on the outside, add some ventilation, and I'd be done, other than painting and decorating and stuff. I'm planning to get one and do some similar modifications and use it for some pigeons!

He's changed the ad now to say they are $150, but he will still give them away if you say you called him on Monday, the day the ad was posted. He said he's had so many calls he couldn't answer them all.

He also told me they weigh between 400 & 600 pounds, and they won't fit in even a full size pickup...they need a flatbed or trailer to transport them.
