It is supposed to be spring here right now. As a matter of fact some of my seeds in the garden have sprouted, BUT it is snowing this morning with a low of 18 tonight! That makes me think we are a long way from harvesting any fresh fruits and veggies my friends.....

Went to my local grocery this morning and the question of "I wonder what they do with all of their old produce?" popped into my head..... SOOOOO I asked! and guess what ? one thing led to another and I came home with NOT just one box of food, but a full car load of free fresh produce

for my chickens to eat!! After sharing with my neighbor I still had to hunt and scrounge for enough space to store all of it!
The moral of this story? ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE!!

Good job on all the free produce! At least it will seem like spring to the chickens for a few minutes!

lucky chickens! i went to my local store and when i asked the same question, i was given a stare and told "We compose it". so instead of feeding it to chjckens they let it spoil! oh well, i asked!

I think a lot of grocery stores won't give out produce that is starting to turn because some people may eat it an d get sick. Law suit. They could also have people bring back the produce and ask for there money back. It is a shame that the world is full of dishonest people.

I had never thought about that. You're right the world is a dishonest place. They did ask and make sure it was going to be for animals though. The awful part is that most of it is still fine. The packaging was out of date, so they just couldn't sell it.

its a shame how much good food is wasted every year! I mean for petes sakes let a conscientious animal owner feed it to their animals instead of making them live off of those dang pellets. And does you grocer have a garden they use this compost in to grow more food? How much dang sense did their response to you even make?

I asked several local grocery stores last summer for expired produce but they wouldn't give it away for fear of people eating it and getting sick, didn't want to get sued. I tried to assure the produce manager it was for chickens but he said they just couldn't do it.

I just watch for stuff on clearance in the produce section now, just bought them some heads of lettuce for a quarter each.

As I understand it onions are not poisonous but if too much is eaten the eggs may taste a little strange.
One of the poultry mags. had an article stating that cabbage , broccoli and there was something else are poisonous to chickens and I feed it to mine quite often and it does not seem to bother them a bit.
