Just wanted to share this. I am finding new homes for my extra roos and having advertised without any luck I tried Craigslist and Freecycle. Who would have thought I would have 5 eggs hatch and 4 were roos out of my welsummer eggs! I had much better results with freecycle than craigslist. Probably cause freecycle in my area is huge! Our freecycle has almost out posted most of the major cities. What I really liked was I could screen the applicants! Most were female and wanted either a pet or breeding stock. I made sure to point out in my post that these birds were hatched by myself, potential breeding stock, and very docile breeds! (to deter people with visions of cock fighting in their heads). I had probably four responses, but all sounded responsible. I am meeting a lady today with my roos, she has some lonely hens and wants new crosses.

Something to think about for people wanting to give away some free birds. Of course like anything there are risks, they could lie but you get to screen them and you can always say no. We are meeting in a neutral public location for the swap as she lives far from me, and I have to go north for an errand anyways.

I've used freecycle too before (not for chickens) but I had a good experience. Meeting in a public location is a must though.

I freecycle in upstate NY and love it. Every once in a while the moderator sends out a warning that you shouldn't put animals on it, but everyone does. My friend just got a georgeous draft horse! Our area is relatively small and most peole sign with their real name and town so after a short while you recognize them (lots of repeat posters) and it often turns out you already know them, or their neighbor, or their sister, or ...

our craigs list won't let you post animals. i've put my roosters up with an "adoption" fee. haven't gotten those flagged yet.

with freecycle, you can't put a price can you?? all i would want is $5 to break even on my feed costs.

No, on freecycle you get "in trouble" if you ask a fee.
In my area, I've found that roos have to go for free. NO ONE will pay for them...unless you take them to the auction-which I haven't done-but hear you can sale them easily there.

Our Freecycle group (in FL) allows pets if they are free. The craigslist doesn't allow you to "sell" animals but you can ask for an adoption fee. Same thing ya know? I did have people respond to the adoption fee but the roos are gone now. (I do have 2 left that someone is calling me back on as soon as he gets a coop--they may get listed again if he doesn't call me back by the end of this week).

The lady who picked them up was a real gem. She is going to give me POLISH chicks!
