Freedom Rangers

The other problem with the 10lb broilers is they don't fit in the crock pot!!

I made this mistake with my first batch of meat birds, let them go to 12 weeks and they are more like small turkeys. Had to break out the turkey roasting pan to cook them!

This time I processed a few at 4lbs live weight, and the rest I will let get to about 8lbs I think. Much more reasonable. Fits in the crock pot. Doesn't take 2 days to defrost.

Grayfields,

Here is an e-mail from the WI Freedom Ranger breeder, her name is Barbara.
Of the Rangers listed which do you prefer? I'm wondering what is the differance between them?
Thanks for any and all info.

I cannot provide blacks as we are only selling REd ranger, Bronze Ranger and Golden Ranger in 2008. These all taste great and would
be comparable and better than the bird he ate, this is because of the breed, which is originally from the old heritage breeds.
Ask him to try ours and see what I mean.

Grayfields,

$379.99 for a pot to cook a chicken?? I don't know about all of you but I certainly don't have that kind of money. I'll use my turkey roaster. I have a huge crock pot to so I'll use that for smaller chickens or cut up the chicken to put it in there for paprikash and such.

I wasn't sure what the question was. Were you asking which breed I would go with? In that case, I really haven't made up my mind. I would pick the one which looks prettiest to you, since it will be your field they are out on.

I don't think there's any magic in one over the other.

I did hold back two of my gourmet blacks for giggles. One was in the next box yesterday acting very broody. But considering she'd be barely 4 months old, it's hard to say what the heck she was doing in there.

WTG holding onto the blacks as you can now breed with them and get your own as you know what you are doing with breeding meat chickens.

Yah I'll go by that then (looks)

I didn't know if the taste was different in the variety (color). (shrug) yah I know I'm a newbie. Learning is great though and a good part of raising chickens.

Thanks Grey,

Ann
