Freedom Rangers

I think Label Rouge is actually a system for rearing birds, slaugherting, and have certain requirements for a breed or hybrid before it can be used in the label rouge program. This is just one of the hybrids used in that system.

I think you are right. Label Rouge is sort of like "organic" in the US, there are requirements for access to outdoors, feed and whatnot in order to qualify for the label.

that was my understanding as well... that the Redbro was one of types used.

i currently have 194 rangers, 80 at 5 weeks today and then 114 at 2 weeks today. when i am able to i will add weights and pics to the ranger grow-out thread.
i gotta say though, i love these birds. super cool little guys.

Mrs. Mucket :

Can anyone compare the flavor of FRs butchered at different ages? Does a couple more weeks yield a tastier bird?

If there was a difference between 10 weeks and 12 weeks (I don't think there is) it would surely be subjective such that one person might prefer 10 weeks and the other 12 weeks.

Here's a question about free-ranging FRs. Would 24-inch tall fencing covered with deer netting keep FRs happy? I've noticed they like to flutter around a lot so maybe they like more airspace. Has anyone used deer netting alone as fencing? I need something to keep them from roaming and flying out, but not necessarily for predator control.

Mrs. Mucket :

Thanks for the pics--nice looking birds!

Out of 26 we only got one dark one. That's my favorite coloring from the J&M pics and I'd hoped to get a lot of them. J&M said it is a tricolor and some others could turn out with tri-coloring too but so far they look like mostly reds and a few yellows.

Has anyone kept track of how much feed they eat? Mine seem to eat whatever is there so I'm not sure if free choice is a good idea?

We are planning to experiment by keeping out two roos and several hens (switching roos between the FR hens and our laying flock) and see what they produce.

Here is another pic of our dark FR chick. The grandkids think it looks like a colored penguin. It not only has brown on its face but a white head spot like barred rock chicks have. He/she already has a name and is not going to be on the dinner menu but will be in the breeding experiment. I don't know though--since they are all hybrids, would this one likely contribute any more coloring than the others?

Edited to add question.

My flock of 30 are going through about 10 lbs a day at five weeks (I had to buy a 20 lb bag and it was gone in two days!!)

I heard my first (attempted) crowing between 10 and 11 weeks.

Mine started "crowing" at four weeks. You know, that gurgling holler that sounds like they're being strangled. Now at 6 weeks, it's still pretty gurgly, but sounds much more like a crow.

Here's an attempt to post pics of my rangers at 5 -6 weeks

I think I've fixed your tags:

You need to use
tag needs to go after the address.

The second two images don't seem to exist, at least not as typed in.
