I would like to get some crested chickens, but have read the crest feathers of all crested breeds besides Silkies are prone to freezing. I live in a region that is very cold, and have seen roosters with deformed combs caused by frostbite.
What happens when crest feathers freeze? How does it affect the well-being and ornamental qualities of the bird in the short-term and long-term?
Is there a way to protect the crest feathers? Do you have to lock the birds inside when it gets to a certain temperature, or when you know they are moulting?
