It is questionable, but I vote pullet. Male Marans usually get big red combs very early, and this one only has a little of that. But get other opinions since it is so in between.
It’s face turned red a lot faster than the rest and stays red. unlike the other where they go back to a pale color in the morning and at night. Don’t know if that matters any lol.

It's either an early maturing female or a slow maturing male. Difficult to know which, but the comb seems small to me, so for now I am going with it being a pullet. If it is male, it should become obvious soon as male specific feathering will begin to appear.

Her legs are thin and close together, she shows very little color, besides black (although that may not mean anything). She has the rust color hackle feathers like a hen would have. I would have picked her as a pullet. Her comb and wattles are small.
I just think she is a pullet. Marans tend to mature slowly!
Please let us know what she/he turns out to be.

Would you mind describing the male specific feathering for BCM? I have a 5 week old that I’m curious about.

Shiny red feathers at the shoulders, and the long, thin, red saddle feathers will start to come in. Usually starts showing at 12 weeks, but can be earlier or later.

Ya mine just turned 12 weeks. Could them getting coccidiosis early on, could that possibly slow the growth? Just curious cause my flock got it when they was about 5 weeks old.
