French black copper Marans sex please? Im pretty sure my small Maran is female but hoping her best mate is female too, any ideas please?..

Agree on needing the age to be sure, but they do look like pullets. They also don't look like pure Black Copper Marans. Proper BCM pullets have deep red in the neck feathering only, not all the way down the chest like that. Also the larger one looks like she may have a small beard, which no Marans would ever have. Cute birds regardless! Where did you get them?
We got them from Bedwells in Bathurst, that’s interesting you don’t think they are pure bredS, the larger one also has a slight scissor beak the poor li thing! I didn’t see that when I purchased them. But I did choose the absolute runts, they were in a cage with so many other chooks these guys were nearly being stomped on, I felt so sorry for them I had to take them! Hope they are both girls! Very hard to find pictures of bc marans at different ages online!

They aren’t BCM they are black sex link pullets.
Ok really I’ll have to check them out, when I first bought them I thought I was getting two golden Wyandottes when I got them home I realised they were not them at all! I wonder what the difference is between what you have said and th BCMarans?

The BSLs will lay normal brown egg thy will have clean legs and are a hybrid. One parent (the mother) is barred while the father can be any color except bared and the males will be barred and the females will look like yours. Did any of the chicks at the place they came from have white stripes on their heads?

Thanks for the reply, both mine are wearing feathered slippers I call them not clean legs, there were too many birds in the cage when I got them to notice the white spot, so I don’t know… I just checked out the BSLs I think they look more like BCMS but I’m no eggspert!…

At those ages, I do believe they are both pullets! Sorry to hear about the scissor beak on the one, but that's sweet of you to take them so they weren't being trampled! ❤️ I am not familiar with the standard for Black Copper Marans in your country, but can't imagine they would differ that much from the ones here. These are a couple of the ones I've owned:

Notice that they have a deeper copper-red color that is only concentrated to the neck and not at all in the chest. Yours have a lighter gold-buff sort of color in the chest, with some spread out into their wings and backs. That is what's referred to as color leakage, not a true pattern, and is common in black sexlink mixes but happens in other mixes as well. They are possibly part BCM, but I don't think they're pure.

Thank you so much for your repl, your two marans are so beautiful ! It is difficult to know what mine are now, but I adore them anyway, so it doesn’t really matter now i was hoping they are BCMs!

They do look a lot like my sex-link Marans (black copper over cuckoo) but they could be a cross of other feather footed breed/s. On a plus you do have two pullets
