I just figured they had been bred to be stupid and lazy, like the cornish x. But I can appreciate unnatural environment playing a role.

I think that is also part of the difference between the production broad breasted and the heritage... but Walnut can correct me if I'm wrong, lol...

I've had many BBB and BBW and Cornish as well. Cornish do seem dull for the most part. Every once in a while you will find one that does not know that it is not a "normal" bird and will hurt itself trying to engage in normal chicken activity.

Broad Breasted turkeys are a very sad thing. They are gentle, intelligent creatures trapped in a body that is not capable of normal turkey behavior thanks to the interference of humans. They learn to not move, because it hurts to move. They eat and drink a lot, because there is not much else in life that can stimulate them. They watch the heritage birds fly up to roost, then droop their heads and go off to lay on the ground in the corner.

I have two Broad Breasted Bronze hens who will live out their natural lives in my flock. I pity the poor things.

Any animal will be as smart as you let them be... these guys are incredible, he really enjoys how much they interact and snuggle...
They're poults, baby turkeys we hatched from Walnut's eggs...
