I think it would be your best bet.

I've done similar on some stuff the kids have made, to help protect their art work, on wood items.

but why wouldn't you want latex paint on their hands? is it unsafe?

So people here do a lot of building, I have been searching the internet and have not found a satisfactory answer. I am building the gate, it is coming along great, working on painting it now. I had an idea of using the girls hand prints to paint flowers on the gate. However I do not want to use the latex paint on my kids hands. I was wondering if I could use acrylic, or even some kids safe washable paint, if I then cover it with a clear acrylic finish paint I have?

I mean the wall paint. I really do not know if it is safe or not (well I do know it isn't safe to eat), just figured the kids non toxic finger paint would be safer, thing 2 is 1, she still puts stuff in her mouth.
